Rwanda
I did a lot of long-distance travel in 2018. By far the most impactful of these trips was the one I took to Rwanda. I had been to Rwanda a few times before this particular trip and was already convinced of Rwanda’s beauty, also called the land of a thousand hills because of its magnificent mountainous landscape . However, this time I went to Rwanda with an organisation called Women and Girls Initiative (WGI) who do a lot of very meaningful community work focused on global female leadership and female empowerment.
The WGI program helps girls go to school and also helps young mothers become financially independent through skill building and knowledge advancement. I spent a few weeks in Rwinkwavu at the Partners in Health headquarters and met the wonderful teams that work throughout the region. Most importantly I got to travel around the region and visit the girls that are in the WGI program, interact with them in person and I also got to experience how the program works and its undeniable impact on the girls and the community. I’m grateful that I was able to spend this very meaningful time with the amazing girls and young women in the program, the staff, and truly experience the WGI program.
