I often feel that discipline gets a bad rap. We associate discipline with life's difficult or unpleasant tasks, the things that we know we should do but struggle to accomplish. Here's a truth: we don't accomplish much in life without self-discipline. When we understand the power that discipline has to deliver joy, we can start to look at the idea of discipline in a different way.
For a lot of us that identify as women of color, daughters of immigrants or first generation achievers, we are often the first in our families to pursue higher education, travel freely, have access to build financial stability, create self-defined careers, have the luxury to take care of our mental, emotional and physical well-being, and so on.
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement when jumping back to the life we knew pre-pandemic. But I realised and even accepted that there’s no “going back to normal” for me. I’m not the same person I was before the pandemic.
This year we’re claiming softness, rest and ease as our birthright. No more hustling, no more rushing, no more burnout inducing unbalanced living. This is the year that we start to take our power back in our personal lives by following our own life rythm.
Clearing your space from things that you no longer need or resonate with helps you create space for the next version of you to come through.
I recently had the opportunity to be part of an important virtual panel talk with some amazing women titled “Black At Work” hosted by Her Online Network.
I was featured on the PEP Talks podcast to talk about ‘Building habits for success’. I had a lot of fun recording this podcast, we talked about the importance of habits and how they support us in achieving our #goals. We also talked about how to set goals that are personal and meaningful to us.
A lot of us are hurting really bad right now, we’re experiencing anger, sadness, grief and a lot of rage.
We are numb, we are tired, we are exhausted, we are distraught.
This is a gentle reminder that we shouldn’t forget to take care of ourselves in this moment. Taking time and space to check in with ourselves right now is a necessary act of love for ourselves so that we can cope long term.
About this time last year, I was getting ready for my first Solo trip ever. I took inspiration from my vision board and set my sails on the Lysefjord in Norway. Ever since I saw an image of the Pulpit Rock I knew that I just had to visit this beautiful summit that was completely breathtaking and awe-inspiring.
I decided to go on this trip quite spontaneously, I had intentionally not made any other plans, I was holding out to be inspired to do something different. So I booked this trip just a few weeks out and went. It felt right on all levels and combined all the things I was looking for to ring in my solar return, nature, hiking and a new experience.

This is the time for all us to really look at our wellness strategies and habits, and if for some reason you don’t have them established yet, then this is a good time to start! This new reality that we find ourselves in is not going away anytime soon from the looks of it, so this is the time to set yourself up to win, mentally, physically and emotionally. This is the time to start creating a power base within yourself to make sure that you can cope with this situation long term and be helpful to others, because we’re going to need each other.
Between living in busy cities where we shuffle ourselves from one place to the next, constant stream of information, and our smartphones feeding us an insane amount of data to process, it’s apparent that it's becoming harder and harder for us to stay connected and grounded in the now.
Things started shifting dramatically for me when I started exercising self-leadership. Taking ownership of your life (both the good and the bad) can be dramatically refreshing. The game changes when you realise that you and only you have the power to change your story. It all comes down to how much you are willing to work for it.
A comprehensive list of my plant-based food swaps and food products that are a staple in my kitchen.
Self-leadership is an essential skill for anyone who wants to achieve their goals and lead a fulfilling life. For women who identify as people-pleasers, it can be particularly challenging to develop this skill.
